This past September, we were thrilled to launch a new youth group at The Cridge Children’s Services — an initiative designed to provide local young people with a safe, welcoming space to connect and have fun.
As two childcare leaders working in School Age Care, we saw kids age out of our programs and recognized a growing need in the community: a positive, engaging environment where these youth could continue building friendships and sharing experiences.
Meeting biweekly on Thursday evenings, our youth group creates opportunities for connection through fun activities. From an enthusiastic Bob Ross–inspired paint night to a hilariously improvised game of Werewolf to a night out at the Board Game Café, we’ve curated a mix of events that encourage middle schoolers to relax, be themselves, and enjoy time with friends—with plenty of laughter along the way. One of our recent highlights was karaoke night. We weren’t sure what to expect, thinking most kids might shy away from the spotlight, but they surprised us! Some came in costume, fully committed to their performances, and the evening turned into a string of comedic solos, spirited duets, and group sing-alongs that kept us entertained until the very end.
Many of the youth who join us are familiar faces from our childcare programs, and we’re excited to offer them a continued sense of belonging as they navigate new stages of life. This group also serves as a stepping stone to our SunFun Leaders in Training program, where older youth have opportunities to build leadership skills, collaborate with peers, and prepare for the future.
“The best part is hanging out with my friends who don’t go to my school.” – F, age 11
We hope to nurture lasting friendships, spark joy, and support the development of our youth. We can’t wait to see how this program evolves!
