Residents' Bill of Rights

Residents' Rights

The rights and welfare of our Residents is a key priority for The Cridge Village Seniors Centre. The following is prominently posted in our building, is copied in every Resident Handbook and is included in every Cridge employee orientation package:

The Cridge Village Seniors Centre Residents’ Bill of Rights

  1. All residents have the right to be treated with dignity and respect and to live in an environment that promotes their health, safety and dignity, including
To be protected from abuse and neglect
To have their personal privacy respected, including in relation to records, belongings and other personal information
  2. The right to have their choices respected and supported and to pursue social, cultural, religious, spiritual and other interests
  3. The right to make their own decisions as capable adults
  4. The right to participate in the development and implementation of care plans that affect them personally that promote their health, safety and dignity, and that take into account their unique abilities, physical, social and emotional needs, and cultural and spiritual preferences
  5. The right to have those services delivered by qualified staff
  6. The right to be kept informed of planned events or changes in the residence or services that affect them personally
  7. The right to a fair process to express their concerns, make complaints or resolve disputes

Scope of rights:

Rights listed from 2 – 7 are subject to what is reasonable practical given the physical, mental and emotional circumstances of the person in care, the need to protect and promote the health and safety of the person in care or another person in care, and the rights of other persons in care

In exercising their rights, residents recognize that they are a part of a unique community and that staff have the responsibility for promoting the safety and comfort of all residents.

Advance Care Planning:

We encourage our Residents to outline their beliefs, values and wishes for their future care so that their close family or trusted friends and health care providers know the adult’s wishes and can respect them in the event that the resident is incapable.

Policies:

We have internal organizational policy manuals that guide the expectations and procedures for care and service. These include policies on confidentiality, abuse and neglect, qualifications and certifications required etc, and relate directly to client protection.

Managed Risk:

Residents in Assisted Living have the right to make choices that may be perceived as making them “at risk” with a potential health or safety concern. In these cases, the facility and resident will create an agreement that defines a mutually acceptable level of choice and risk that will be honoured for that resident.

Complaints?

Any concerns or questions regarding rights, welfare or other matters impacting resident service should be immediately directed to the Manager of Seniors’ Services.
