Dan’s Jokes: From Macdonald House to the World

At Macdonald House, a home for survivors of brain injury, we believe that there is always a way – a way to try new things, a way to get where we are going, a way to think differently. This residence is home to 10 male survivors of brain injury who continue to find new ways to overcome challenges, find joy, build connections and lead healthy lives. Macdonald House is built on a foundation of care: 24 hours a day direct care, nursing, rehab supports, meals, and recreation programming.

Yet it’s so much more. The nuances of truly individualized client care means meeting each person where they are at – considering their strengths, needs, and passions and building a support plan around that. It means getting creative to find new opportunities and avenues that keep life safe and stable, but also meaningful and engaging.

One survivor at Macdonald House who has lived here since its opening in 1991 has experienced the care and commitment of the program and workers for decades. He has also been telling his jokes for decades! So, in embracing that, what better way for a comedian to tell his jokes than to bring him a bigger audience.

Recently we connected our long-time resident Dan with podcast extraordinaire Greg Goldberg, who produces our very own Time to Talk Traumatic Brain Injury podcast. Designed for survivors by survivors, this show is a beautiful example of going beyond the basics of care to meet the deeper needs of purpose and meaning.

As a self-described “sit down comedian” Dan has been eager to share his jokes. Dan and Greg teamed up to create something special: a lighthearted, comedic episode full of stories, laughter, and personality. And the best part? This will be a recurring segment, giving Dan the chance to keep sharing his humor and unique perspective with the world. You can find the debut podcast episode featuring the comedian in a chair at cridge.org/dan – enjoy listening!
