Our New Artwork

September brought a few décor updates to The Cridge Senior’s Village Centre, specifically in the Grand Lounge, Dining Room, and our hallways. Along with new furnishings, we welcomed new artwork to our walls and are excited to share more about the artists behind it.

The art in our resident lounges were done by artist Dana Statham, who lives in the neighbourhood. Dana grew up on the island and works with acrylics in bold, vibrant colours that “captures the spirit of coastal British Columbia”. The pieces on the 3rd floor are titled San Josef Bay (rock formations) and Solitude (coastal arbutus). On the 4th floor are Intertidal (beach) and First Leap (mountain view). We just love how the blues and turquoises in her works fit with the new colour schemes in those spaces.

The prints in our bistro are by Michelle Barkway. Michelle lives in Victoria and paints with acrylics, using harder edges to “simplify intensely complex ecosystems into their larger component parts, creating a sense of order and serenity on the canvas”. Her works fit perfectly into our new bistro – some say that it was as if we designed the bistro around her work!

In our dining room, we’ve featured artist Mike Lathrop. I first came across Mike’s work at the Gorge Road Canada Day Picnic, where you can watch him at work in his booth. I was awed by how quickly he created such delightful west coast scenes. The big piece above the mantle is titled Daisies at Aylard Farm (Sooke); by the servery doors is Islands from Bear Hill. Along the wall starting from the hallway is Gillespie Island at Matheson Lake, Babbling Brook at Goldstream, Summer Sun on Sidney Spit and on the opposite wall is In the Thick of It at Camp Barnard (Sooke). All very local places!

Finally, Carol Bednarski is created the lovely pieces in the Family Dining Room and the Grand Lounge. Carol is a Victoria artist who uses acrylics in abstract and impressionists styles to “express what is authentic, true and beautiful in the world”. The field of flowers in the Family Dining Room is a piece called Alone at Twilight and the large one in the Grand Lounge is called Gonzales Bay.

We are very grateful to all of these artists for their beautiful pieces and for their generosity. All of them either donated or discounted their artwork to help us stretch our budget, as we are a non-profit after all. We were also helped immensely by local printer Artbox who worked with us closely and helped us to reuse old frames.

We hope you enjoy these beautiful works by local talent.
