Along with ensuring our survivors have meaningful activities in their life, we are also concerned with food security and sustainability.
In 2009, the World Summit on Food Security declared the four pillars of food security are availability, access, utilization, and stability. Following a brain injury, most survivors live on an extremely limited income. After paying rent and utilities, not much is left for food. They often become dependant on food banks and purchasing items like bread and peanut butter and jam at discount stores. This kind of diet does not promote brain health or assist in their recovery. What they need is fresh whole foods such as dark leafy greens, lean protein and fruit. Our clients wanted to eat well but could not afford it. This led us to secure a small garden plot on The Cridge property where we teach survivors how to garden and grow their own food.
