Independent Housing with Support

The Cridge Brain Injury Services offers two levels of support to brain injury survivors who are ready for more independent living.

1. Mary Cridge Manor

Mary Cridge Manor provides supportive housing to individuals with brain injuries in a mixed use setting in which people with brain injuries live among non-disabled peers. Support is focused on instrumental activities such as planning, scheduling, budgeting, problem solving, and accessing community resources.

The length of stay at Mary Cridge Manor is approximately three years. Clients are supported to move through four phases of habilitation. In each phase, the client identifies goals toward transitioning to living independantly in the community. A Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist, Speech Language Pathologist and Neuro-Psychologist are available to ensure the clients’ strengths are maximized and progress continues.

The four phases of the program are:

  1. Developmental Phase: Initial assessments assist the client and Case Manager to identify capabilities and areas of challenge. All clients benefit from an OT assessment in the kitchen and the bathroom when arriving at Mary Cridge Manor. Other assessments such as speech, physio and neuropsych are administered as determined by the Cridge Brain Injury Program, Case Manager and VIHA BIP.

  2. Skill Building & Expansion of Community Connections Phase: Support in this phase is directed toward helping clients develop the capacities and resources they will need to be successful living independantly.

  3. Transition Phase: Development of new strateies and systems appropriate to the client's new setting.

  4. Community Follow-up/Outreach Phase: Assesment of systems and strategies in place in the clients new setting and refinement of these.

2. Independent Living with Community Support

Clients who are able to return to their family home or to a new home of their own can receive assistance with the day-to-day tasks of managing their household as they continue to move towards a fully independent lifestyle.
